(Glacier Sedge, Gletscher-Segge, Carice glaciale, Laîche des glaciers) in Switzerland and Italy. The new locations were found resulting from a specific search in the field between 2016 and 2019. Until now, this species was known from only a single population in the French Alps, discovered in 2004. Our research allowed the confirmation of two hypotheses based on which our search effort was made, that (1) Carex glacialis, an inconspicuous species rather unknown by alpine botanists, must be indigenous to the Alps and (2) this species has most certainly a much wider distribution in the Alps. As a result of our search, this arctic-alpine species is now known to be more widespread in the Alps than previously thought and we regard it as highly likely that even more populations do exist in the Alps (especially in France, Switzerland and Italy). Further extensive search is needed and encouraged in the Alps as well as in more northern and eastern regions, to determine its origin and migration route into the Alps, as well as its possible rarity and its IUCN threat category (especially regarding the potential threats it may face regarding climate change or more direct human impact such as tourism or other land use). Hopefully, this article will be useful to new research efforts, including molecular studies, involving this fascinating arctic-alpine species.
Philippe Juillerat, Jérémie Guenat, Beat Bäumler Copyright (c) 2025 Philippe Juillerat, Jérémie Guenat, Beat Bäumler https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://eterna.unibas.ch/bauhinia/article/view/1603 Sat, 03 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0000 Beiträge zur Flora des Naturschutzgebietes Petite Camargue Alsacienne (St-Louis, F) https://eterna.unibas.ch/bauhinia/article/view/1605
Contributions to the flora of the nature reserve Petite Camargue Alsacienne (St-Louis, France): Based on personal observations in the last 24 years and literature research on vascular plants of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne (Alsace, France), the floristic change since the publication of the «Flora von Basel und Umgebung» (1997) is described. Since then, 68 additional species were noted and the presence of 43 nationally or regionally endangered species of the natural sites were confirmed. The actual state of 63 species and subspecies classified as protected, endangered or rare in Alsace is presented. This material comprises, among others, the manuscripts of Senn’s presentation at his PhD thesis exam and of his lecture held at the colloquium of his habilitation, but also scientific illustrations, e.g. from Senn’s PhD thesis on colonial unicellular green algae, of his chapter on flagellates in Engler & Prantl’s «Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien» (Senn 1900), etc. Senn was an outstanding microscopist and excellent scientific illustrator. Particularly interesting are the very accurate drawings from the practical course in Botany held in 1895 by Prof. Georg Albrecht Klebs, where Senn, as a student aged 20, discovered the movement of chloroplasts in leaf cells of Vallisneria sp. Later, he thoroughly investigated this phenomenon and became world famous for this discovery.
Prof. em. Dr. Rosmarie Honegger Copyright (c) 2025 Prof. em. This compilation in Latin replaced the 200-years older regional flora of Caspar Bauhin, and was organised according to the plant sexual system (classification) of Carl von Linné. In the present publication, the organisation and overall design of the Hagenbach flora is delineated. The specific textual structure of the flora is exemplified by using the description of the plant Polygonatum odoratum by C. F. Hagenbach.
Dr. Heinz Schneider Copyright (c) 2025 Dr. Heinz Schneider https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://eterna.unibas.ch/bauhinia/article/view/1608 Sat, 03 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0000 Carl Friedrich Hagenbach (1771–1849) und seine «Basler Flora» im historischen Kontext https://eterna.unibas.ch/bauhinia/article/view/1609
Carl Friedrich Hagenbach (1771–1849) and his “Flora of Basel” in its historic context: The floristic exploration of the surroundings of Basel (Switzerland) began in 1622 with the “Catalogus plantarum circa Basileam sponte nascentium” of Caspar Bauhin, one of the first comprehensive local floras worldwide. In 1821, almost 200 years later, Carl Friedrich Hagenbach, successor of Werner De Lachenal as the professor of Botany at the University of Basel, published the “Tentamen Florae basileensis” in an effort to carefully document all occurrences of plant species in the greater region of Basel in the first half of the 19th century. Hagenbachs Flora is structured according to the Linnean sexual system and refers to the names (polynomials) used by Caspar Bauhin in his Flora of Basel of 1622. Therefore, Hagenbachs “Tentamen” mediates between the beginnings of modern Botany in the 16th century and scientific plant taxonomy and systematics as it developed after Linnaeus. The relative completeness of the account of the regional flora makes the “Tentamen” an important milestone, as it represents a time period before the industrial era and before major changes in town and country planning, including the correction of waterbodies. Thereafter, the associated decline in landscape and habitat diversity caused a loss of many native plant species. Here, we summarize the available biographic knowledge on C. F. Hagenbach, the process of compilation of his flora, and we highlight the significance of his work in the historic context of the floristic exploration of the surroundings of Basel, in Switzerland and Europe.
Prof. Dr. Jürg Stöcklin, Dr. Jurriaan M. de Vos Copyright (c) 2025 Prof. Dr. Jürg Stöcklin, Dr. Jurriaan M. de Vos https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://eterna.unibas.ch/bauhinia/article/view/1609 Sat, 03 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0000
