Abstract
The flora of Basel by Carl Friedrich Hagenbach: The flora of Basel published in three volumes between 1821 and 1843 by Hagenbach is the most important document on the occurrence and distribution of plants in the Basel region in the 19th century. This compilation in Latin replaced the 200-years older regional flora of Caspar Bauhin, and was organised according to the plant sexual system (classification) of Carl von Linné. In the present publication, the organisation and overall design of the Hagenbach flora is delineated. The specific textual structure of the flora is exemplified by using the description of the plant Polygonatum odoratum by C. F. Hagenbach.
