Abstract
In the 1860ies the printer Johann Jakob Hunziker came to India to work for the Basel Mission Press in Mangalore. Enthusiastic about the tropical flora he produced two large-sized volumes of Nature’s Selfprintings, showing specimens which are both botanically interesting as well as ornamental. The revival of nature printing alongside the early stages of photography can also be read as a statement in favour of artistic authenticity. The article refers to the techniques of Hunziker’s selfprintings as well as to the larger projects of collecting and reflecting the botanical and cultural diversity of India.
