Abstract
Molopospermum peloponnesiacum (L.) Koch (Umbelliferae) belongs to a monotypic genus, and is an endemic of the Pyrenees, Cevennes and Alpine regions. Its chromosome number 2n = 46 is established for the first time. The tertiary origin of the genus is confirmed by its basic secondary genome, x = 23, considered as palaeopolyploid. The systematic position of the genus in the Umbelliferae is discussed on the basis of a synthesis of the caryological data. The genus Molopospermum appears to be more closely connected to the tribe of Smyrnieae than to the Scandiceae.
